George G. Symes

George Gifford Symes (born April 28, 1840 in Ashtabula County , Ohio , † November 3, 1893 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Symes attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to practice in his new profession. During the Civil War , he was an officer in a Wisconsin volunteer unit that fought on the side of the Union. In the course of the war he rose to the rank of colonel . After the war practiced Symes as a lawyer in Paducah ( Kentucky ). He later moved to the Montana Territory , where he was an associate judge on the Supreme Court between 1869 and 1871. He then worked as a lawyer in Helena . In 1874, Symes moved to Denver.

In the congressional election of 1884 Symes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington , where he succeeded James B. Belford on March 4, 1885 . After a re-election in 1886, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1889 . After leaving Congress, Symes took on the management of his estate. He also worked as a lawyer again. He died in Denver in November 1893 and was buried there.
