Ashtabula County [ æʃtəˈbjuːlə ] is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Jefferson .

The county is located in the extreme northeast of Ohio, borders Pennsylvania to the east, Lake Erie to the north , the southernmost of the 5 Great Lakes and has an area of 3544 square kilometers, of which 1725 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Erie County, Pennsylvania, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, Trumbull County, and Geauga County .

Ashtabula County was formed on February 10, 1807 from parts of Geauga County and Trumbull County. It was named after the Ashtabula River , Ashtabula being the Indian word for fish river .
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Joshua Reed Giddings Law Office . 38 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 6, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Ashtabula County had 102,728 people in 39,397 households and 27,774 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.07 percent white , 3.16 percent African American , 0.19 percent American Indian , 0.34 percent Asian American , 0.02 percent Pacific islander and 0.85 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.36 percent were descended from two or more races . 2.23 percent of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
Of the 39,397 households, 32.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, 29.5 percent were non-families, 24.8 percent were single households, and 10.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.05.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 35,607 USD , and the median income for a family was 42,449 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,105 versus $ 22,624 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,814. 9.2 percent of families and 12.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 17.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.

Ashtabula County is experiencing significant economic development due to its convenient location on the shores of Lake Erie . While agriculture, in spite of mechanization , diversification and operational specialization, is of subordinate importance for the economy, secondary and tertiary economic sectors (manufacturing industry and services) are of considerable importance. Ashtabula County's industrial centers are Ashtabula , Conneaut , Geneva , North Kingsville, and Jefferson . With the exception of Jefferson, all of them are directly or near Lake Erie.
Agriculture
In 2007, Ashtabula County, Ohio had a total of 1,280 farms (agricultural operations). The average size is about 132 acres , which corresponds to about 52.42 hectares . This means that the average agricultural area per holding is below the value that is usually permitted for a farm by the Homestead Act of 1862 when the American West was settled.
Of the farms, 73 are “Grade A dairy farms”, ie highly specialized dairy farms. By far the two most important industries in Ashtabula County are metal processing and the chemical, rubber and plastics processing industries, with the latter benefiting in particular from its location on Lake Erie. There are also some mechanical engineering companies located here, as well as suppliers for vehicle construction.
