Lawrence County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Ironton .

The county is located in the extreme south of Ohio, borders West Virginia and Kentucky and has an area of 1,184 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jackson County , Gallia County , Cabell County, West Virginia, Wayne County, West Virginia, Boyd County, Kentucky, Greenup County, Kentucky, and Scioto County .
history
Lawrence County was formed on December 21, 1815 from parts of Gallia County and Scioto County. It was named after James Lawrence , a naval officer who became famous with the saying: “Don't give up the ship” in the British-American War of 1812 after he was fatally wounded.

According to the 2000 census , there were 62,319 people in 24,732 households and 17,807 families in Lawrence County. The population density was 53 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.55 percent white, 2.09 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.57 percent of the population.
Of the 24,732 households, 32.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, 28.0 percent were non-families, 24.9 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 88.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,127 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,308. Males had a median income of $ 30,622 versus $ 20,961 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,678. 15.1 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 27.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
