Putnam County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Ottawa .

The county is located in northwest Ohio, about 50 km to the west from the Indiana border, and covers an area of 1,254 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Henry County , Hancock County , Allen County , Van Wert County , Paulding County , Defiance County, and Wood County .
history
Putnam County was formed on February 12, 1820 from parts of Shelby County. It was named after Israel Putnam , a general in the American War of Independence who u. a. fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775).
Ten buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Putnam County had 34,726 people in 12,200 households and 9,308 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.26 percent white, 0.17 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.38 percent of the population.
Of the 12,200 households, 39.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 64.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.4 percent were single mothers, 23.7 percent were non-families, 21.3 percent were single households, and 10.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.29 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,426 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,859. Males had a median income of $ 36,548 versus $ 23,963 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,680. 4.0 percent of families and 5.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 6.4 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
