Darke County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Greenville .

The county is located in western Ohio, bordering Indiana, and has an area of 1,555 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Mercer County , Shelby County , Miami County , Montgomery County , Preble County , Wayne County, Indiana, Randolph County (Indiana), and Jay County, Indiana.

history

Darke County was formed on January 3, 1809 from parts of Miami County. It was named after William Darke , an officer in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Darke County had 53,309 people in 20,419 households and 14,905 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.09 percent white, 0.39 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.86 percent of the population.

Of the 20,419 households, 33.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers, 27.0 percent were non-families, 23.5 percent were single households, and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.3 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,307 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,735. Males had a median income of $ 32,933 versus $ 23,339 for females.
