Huron County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Norwalk .

The county is located in northern Ohio, about 15 km from Lake Erie , the southernmost of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of ​​1,281 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Erie County , Lorain County , Ashland County , Richland County , Crawford County , Seneca County, and Sandusky Counties .

history

Huron County was formed on February 7, 1809 from parts of Cuyahoga County and Portage County and finally organized the following year. It was named after the North American Indian people, the Hurons .

According to the 2000 census , there were 59,487 people in 22,307 households and 16,217 families in Huron County. The population density was 47 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.98 percent white, 0.97 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.63 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.99 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.9 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,558 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,911. Males had a median income of $ 35,760 versus $ 22,785 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,133. 6.5 percent of families and 8.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 11.0 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
