Ottawa County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Port Clinton .

The county is located in northern Ohio, borders in the northeast on Lake Erie , the southernmost of the 5 Great Lakes and has an area of 1515 square kilometers, of which 660 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Erie County , Sandusky County , Wood County, and Lucas Counties .
history
Ottawa County was formed on March 6, 1840 from parts of Erie, Lucas and Sandusky Counties. It was named after the North American Indian people of the Ottawa .
There is a national memorial in the county , the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial , which commemorates a naval battle from the British-American War . Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , Jay Cooke House and Johnson's Island Civil War Prison . 29 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 6, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Ottawa County had 40,985 people in 16,474 households and 11,729 families. The population density was 62 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.56 percent white, 0.65 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.44 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.87 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.75 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 16,474 households, 29.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 25.0 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 44,224 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,919. Males had a median income of $ 39,823 versus $ 24,727 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,973. 4.2 percent of families and 5.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 7.4 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 5.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
