Scioto County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Portsmouth .

The county is located in southern Ohio, bordering Kentucky and has an area of ​​1,596 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pike County , Jackson County , Lawrence County , Greenup County, Kentucky, Lewis County, Kentucky, and Adams County .

history

Scioto County was formed on March 24, 1803 from parts of Adams County. It was named after the Scioto River , whose name comes from the Wyandot .

According to the 2000 census , Scioto County had 79,195 people in 30,871 households and 21,362 families. The population density was 50 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.88 percent white, 2.73 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.18 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.31 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.96 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 91.2 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,008 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,691. Males had a median income of $ 32,063 versus $ 21,562 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,408. 15.2 percent of families and 19.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
