The Washington County is a county in the US state of Ohio . At the 2010 census , the county had 61,778 residents and a population density of 37.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Marietta .
geography
The county is located in southeast Ohio at the confluence of the Muskingum River with the Ohio River. Washington County borders West Virginia to the south and southwest , from which it is separated by the Ohio. It has an area of 1,658 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. history
Washington County was formed on July 27, 1788 as the original county from designated free territory. It was named after George Washington (1732-1799), the leader of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and first President of the United States (1789-1797).
There is a National Historic Landmark in the county , the tugboat WP Snyder Jr. 39 buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 19, 2018).
