Marietta is a city and seat of the county seat of Washington County in the US state of Ohio . In the 2000 census , 14,515 inhabitants were counted. It was the oldest city in the Northwest Territory (now the US state of Ohio).

In 1788 , a group of 48 men from the Ohio Company of Associates arrived at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers and established the first city of the newly established Northwest Territory there. The city was first called Adelphia and later renamed "Marietta" by the group around General James Mitchell Varnum in honor of Marie Antoinette , Queen of France . The name was changed out of gratitude for the French help to support the young republic in the fight for independence from Great Britain .

Demographics

According to the census in 2000 , 14,515 people lived here in 5904 households and 3501 families. The population density was 674 per km ². 6609 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 96.31% White, 1.08% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.06% (eight to nine) Pacific Islanders, and 0 , 28% from other races; 1.11% said they came from several ethnic groups. 0.79% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,904 households, 27.2% had children or adolescents living with them. 42.4% were married couples living together, 13.1% were a single mother, and 40.7% were non-families. 35.1% were made up of single households and 14.6% had people who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.86 people.

The population was divided into 20.9% under 18 years, 14.0% from 18 to 24 years, 25.1% from 25 to 44 years, 22.3% from 45 to 64 years and 17.7% from 65 years or older. The mean age ( median ) was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 82.8 males.

The median income for a household (median) was 29 272  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 36,042. Males had a median income of $ 30,683 and females $ 22,085. The per capita income was $ 18,021. 13.6% of families and 16.9% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 24.6% under the age of 18 and 10.4% between the ages of 65 and over.

education

The Marietta City School District includes a high school , a middle school and four elementary schools , which are attended by approximately 3,000 students from Marietta, Reno , Devola , Harmar and Oak Grove .

Located near the city center is the Marietta College, founded in 1835 . It is a co-educational, non-denominational , privately owned college with 111 teachers and approx. 1200 students (as of 2019/2020).
