Guernsey County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Cambridge .
geography
The county is located in east-east Ohio, about 37 miles from the West Virginia border, and covers an area of 1,368 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tuscarawas County , Harrison County , Belmont County , Noble County , Muskingum County, and Coshocton County .
history
Guernsey County was formed on January 31, 1810 from parts of Belmont County and Muskingum County. It was named after the island of Guernsey , the second largest of the British Channel Islands , the origin of some of the first settlers in the area.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the S Bridge, National Road . 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Guernsey County had 40,792 people in 16,094 households and 11,233 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.28 percent white, 1.53 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.36 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.62 percent of the population.
Of the 16,094 households, 32.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, 30.2 percent were non-families, 26.1 percent were single households, and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,110 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,660. Males had a median income of $ 30,142 versus $ 20,804 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,542. 12.9 percent of families and 16.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 21.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
