The Jefferson County is a county in the US state of Ohio . The county seat is Steubenville .

The county is located in the far east of Ohio and borders West Virginia , the border of which is formed by the Ohio River . It has an area of 1064 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. The following counties border Jefferson County:

history
Jefferson County was formed on July 27, 1797 from parts of Washington County. It was named after Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the third President of the United States (1801-1809).
There are two National Historic Landmarks in the county , the Benjamin Lundy House and the Mount Pleasant Historic District . 25 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 28, 2018).
