Smithfield is a village in Jefferson County , Ohio, United States. The 2000 census counted 867 residents.

During the American Civil War, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan crossed the villages of Moorefield, Harrisville , New Athens , Smithfield, New Alexandria , Wintersville , Two Ridge, Richmond , East Springfield, Bergholz , and Monroeville on his way north, where he was defeated had to plug. This military operation came to be known as Morgan's Raid .

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Smithfield was inhabited by 867 people. The population density was 349 people per square kilometer. There were 405 housing units, an average of 163 per square kilometer. The Smithfield population was 87.0 percent white , 9.8 percent African American , 0.1 percent Native American, and 0.4 percent other races; 2.8 percent named two or more races. 0.2 percent of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Smithfields were distributed among 348 households out of which 27.4 percent had children under the age of 18. 48.9 percent of households were married, 11.5 percent had a female head of household without a husband, and 35.5 percent did not form families. 32.1 percent of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 15.6 percent of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.9 people.

The population was divided into 24.1 percent minors, 6 percent 18–24 year olds, 26.1 percent 25–44 year olds, 24 percent 45–64 year olds and 19.8 percent aged 65 or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 90.5 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 82.8 men.

The median household income in Smithfield was 25,179 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 30,833 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 33,500 compared to $ 17,813 for women. The per capita income was $ 13,734. 21.4 percent of the population and 28.8 percent of families had an income below the poverty line , including 37.0 percent of minors and 19.1 percent of those aged 65 and over.
