Sandusky County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Fremont .
geography
The county is located in northern Ohio, borders in the northeast on Lake Erie , the southernmost of the 5 Great Lakes and has an area of 1082 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Ottawa County , Erie County , Huron County , Seneca County, and Wood County .
history
Sandusky County was formed on February 12, 1820 from parts of Huron County. It was named after the expression otsaandosti or sandesti the Wyandot , which means something like "(cold) water".
The county has a National Historic Landmark , Spiegel Grove , which was the home of former President Rutherford B. Hayes . Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Sandusky County had 61,792 people in 23,717 households and 16,957 families. The population density was 58 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.20 percent white, 2.67 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.61 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.96 percent of the population.
Of the 23,717 households, 33.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers, 28.5 percent were non-families, 24.1 percent were single households and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.04.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 40,584 , and the median income for a family was $ 47,675. Males had a median income of $ 35,501 versus $ 23,964 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,239. 5.7 percent of families and 7.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 9.1 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
