Adams County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is West Union .

The county is located in the south of the US state Ohio, right on the border with the neighboring state of Kentucky . Adams County covers a total of 1,517 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. Adams County was officially founded on July 10, 1797. The main town is West Union , which is also the largest town in the entire county. Adams County is sparsely populated In 2000, Adams County had 27,330 people, which corresponds to a population density of only 18 people per square kilometer (see demographics below ). The county borders in a clockwise direction on the counties: Highland County , Pike County , Scioto County , Lewis Kentucky County , Mason County, Kentucky, and Brown County .

Adams County was formed on July 10, 1797 from parts of Hamilton County. It was named after John Adams , the first vice president and second president of the United States.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Great Serpent Mound . 16 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 6, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Adams County had 27,330 people in 10,501 households and 7,613 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.77 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.10 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.64 percent of the population.
Of the 10,501 households, 34.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 27.5 percent were non-families, 24.0 percent were single households, and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.03.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.7 percent between the ages of 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between the ages of 25 and 44, and 23.4 percent between the ages of 45 and 64 13.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 94.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,315 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,714. Males had a median income of $ 30,000 and women $ 20,433. The per capita income was $ 14,515. 12.8 percent of families and 17.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 20.3 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 16.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
