Mason County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Maysville , named after John May , who donated the land to the founding of the city.

The county is located in northeast Kentucky, borders the state of Ohio to the north , separated by the Ohio River, and has an area of 639 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lewis County , Fleming County , Robertson County, and Bracken County .

Mason County was formed on November 5, 1788 from parts of Bourbon County. It was named after George Mason , a political leader.

According to the 2000 census , Mason County had 16,800 people in 6,847 households and 4,697 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.88 percent white, 7.16 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.57 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.95 percent of the population.

Of the 6,847 households, 31.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers, 31.4 percent were non-families, 27.6 percent were single households, and 12.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 89.5 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,195 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,257. Males had a median income of $ 30,718 versus $ 21,216 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,589. 12.9 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 23.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
