Russell County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Jamestown , named after James Woodridge , who provided the land for the city's founding. The county was a Dry Counties until 2016 , which means that alcohol sales were restricted or prohibited. In January 2016, the population voted to sell alcohol through certified traders, making Russell County Wet County .

The county is located in southern Kentucky, about 30 km from the state of Tennessee and has an area of 732 square kilometers, of which 76 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Casey County , Pulaski County , Wayne County , Clinton County , Cumberland County, and Adair County .
history
Russell County was formed on December 14, 1825 from parts of Adair County, Cumberland County and Wayne County. It was named after Colonel William Russell .

Russell County had a population of 16,315 as of the 2000 census . 171 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,941 households and 4,796 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.34 percent white, 0.58 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.86 percent of the population.
Of the 6,941 households, 29.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers, 30.9 percent were non-families, 28.0 percent were single households and 12.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were statistically 91.0 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 22,042 , and the median income for a family was $ 27,803. Males had a median income of $ 24,193 versus $ 18,289 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,183. 20.4 percent of families and 24.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 30.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 27.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
