Estill County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Irvine , named after Colonel William Irvine , an early settler. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in east central Kentucky and has an area of 662 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clark County , Powell County , Lee County , Jackson County, and Madison Counties .
history
Estill County was formed on January 27, 1808 from parts of Clark County and Madison County. It was named after Captain James Estill , who was killed at the Battle of Little Mountain in 1782 .

According to the 2000 census , Estill County had 15,307 people; 6,108 households and 4,434 families were counted. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.07 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.53 percent of the population.
Of the 6,108 households, 32.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.4 percent were married couples living together, 12.9 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent were single households, and 10.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 23,318 USD , and the median income for a family was 27,284 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,254 versus $ 18,849 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,285. 22.5 percent of families and 26.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 32.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 21.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
