Washington County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Springfield .

The county is located just north of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of 781 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Anderson County , Mercer County , Boyle County , Marion County, and Nelson County .
history
Washington County was formed on June 22, 1792 from parts of Nelson County. It was named after President George Washington .

According to the 2000 census , Washington County had 10,916 people in 4,121 households and 3,020 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.62 percent white, 7.51 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian and 0.61 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.60 percent of the population.
Of the 4,121 households, 33.1 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 26.7 percent were non-families, 24.0 percent were single households and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.03.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 91.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,136 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,240. Males had a median income of $ 27,624 versus $ 21,593 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,722. 10.3 percent of families and 13.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 19.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
