The county is located in southwest Kentucky, about 25 km to the south from Tennessee and about 30 km to the north from Illinois . It has an area of 664 square kilometers, of which 105 square kilometers are water surface. The county lies on the lower reaches of the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers . Lyon County was formed on January 14, 1854 from parts of Caldwell County. It was named after Chittenden Lyon , a son of the early settler Matthew Lyon.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , there were 8,314 people in 3,272 households in Lyon County. The population density was 14.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.02 people lived in each of the 3272 households.
The racial the population was composed of 93.0 percent white, 5.4 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.3 percent of the population, regardless of ethnicity.
15.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 63.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.1 percent were 65 years or older. 44.7 percent of the population was female.
