Bullitt County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Shepherdsville , named after Adam Shepherd, an early settler and mill owner.

The county is located north of the geographic center of Kentucky, is only two kilometers to the west from the Ohio River and Indiana , and has an area of 778 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jefferson Counties , Spencer Counties , Nelson Counties , and Hardin Counties .

Bullitt County was formed on December 13, 1796 from parts of Jefferson County and Nelson County. It was named after the governor Alexander Scott Bullitt .

According to the census in 2000 , 61,236 people lived here in 22,171 households and 17,736 families. The population density was 79 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 98.07% White, 0.38% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 0.16% other ethnic groups. 0.77% were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.63% of the population.
Of the 22,171 households, 39.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 65.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 20.0 percent were non-families, 16.4 percent were single households and 5.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.07.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 7.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 97.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,106 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,481. Males had a median income of $ 35,851 versus $ 24,098 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,339. 6.2 percent of families and 7.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 11.4 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
