Knox County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Barbourville , named after James Barbour , who provided the land for the district court building. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southeast Kentucky, about 20 km to the south from Tennessee , about 30 km to the southeast from Virginia , and covers an area of ​​1004 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clay County , Bell Counties , Whitley Counties , and Laurel Counties .

history

Knox County was formed on December 19, 1799 from parts of Lincoln County . It was named after Henry Knox , a general and US Secretary of War. On September 19, 1861, near Barbourville, a battle between about 300 Union troops and 800 Confederates took place as part of the Civil War , which the Confederates won.

A total of eight buildings and sites in the county, including the Knox County Courthouse in Barbourville, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 9, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Knox County had 31,795 people in 12,416 households and 8,939 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.84 percent white, 0.82 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 88.7 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 18,294 , and the median income for a family is $ 23,136. Males had a median income of $ 24,833 versus $ 18,390 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,660. 29.6 percent of families and 34.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
