Boyd County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Catlettsburg , which was named after one of the first settlers here, Alexander Catlett and his son Horatio Catlett .

The county is located in northeast Kentucky, borders Ohio to the northeast , separated by the Ohio River , borders Virginia to the east, and has an area of ​​419 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise in Kentucky by the following counties: Greenup County , Lawrence County, and Carter Counties .

history

Boyd County was formed on February 16, 1860 from parts of Carter County, Greenup County and Lawrence County. It was named after Linn Boyd, a member of the US Congress .

According to the 2000 census , Boyd County's population was 49,752. Of these, 2,077 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 20,010 households and 14,107 families. The population density was 120 inhabitants per square kilometer. The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,749 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,125. Males had a median income of $ 35,728 versus $ 22,591 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,212. 11.5 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. These included 22.4 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 12.1 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
