Rockcastle County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Mount Vernon . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in east central Kentucky, about 50 miles south of the state of Tennessee , and has an area of ​​824 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Garrard County , Madison County , Jackson County , Laurel County , Pulaski County, and Lincoln County .

history

Rockcastle County was formed on January 8, 1810 from parts of Knox County, Lincoln County, Madison County and Pulaski County. It was named after the Rockcastle River .

Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 20, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Rockcastle County had 16,582 people in 6,544 households and 4,764 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer.
