Hancock County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Hawesville , named after Richard Hawes , who donated the land to the founding of the city. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in western Kentucky, borders Indiana to the north , separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 515 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise in Kentucky by the following counties: Breckinridge County , Ohio County, and Daviess County .
history
Hancock County was formed on January 3, 1829 from parts of Breckinridge County, Daviess County and Ohio County. It was named after John Hancock , a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 1, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Hancock County had 8,392 people in 3,215 households and 2,436 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.0 percent white, 0.9 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.8 percent of the population.
Of the 3,215 households, 36.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 64.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, 24.2 percent were non-families, 21.2 percent were single households, and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 36,914 USD , and the median income for a family was 42,994 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,294 versus $ 23,574 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,623. 11.4 percent of families and 13.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 18.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
