Hardin County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Elizabethtown , which was named after the wife of Colonel Andrew Hynes , who donated the land to the founding of the city.

The county is located slightly west of the geographic center of Kentucky, borders the state of Indiana to the north , separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 1,631 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jefferson County , Bullitt County , Nelson County , LaRue County , Hart County , Grayson County , Breckinridge County, and Meade Counties .
history
Hardin County, named after Colonel John Hardin , was formed on December 15, 1792 from parts of Nelson County. In the 19th century, the neighboring districts of LaRue County, Hart County, Grayson County, Breckinridge County and Meade County were formed in whole or in part from areas of Hardin County.
A total of 90 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 2, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Hardin County had 94,174 people in 34,497 households and 25,355 families. The population density was 58 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.99 percent white, 11.87 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 1.80 percent Asian, 0.22 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.35 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.35 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 34,497 households, 38.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, 26.5 percent were non-families, 22.8 percent were single households and 7.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.07.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 10.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 100.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,744 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,610. Males had a median income of $ 30,743 versus $ 22,688 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,487. 8.2 percent of families and 10.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 13.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
