Ohio County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Hartford . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in west central Kentucky, about 25 miles north of the state of Illinois and has an area of 1,546 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hancock County , Breckinridge County , Grayson County , Butler County , Muhlenberg County , McLean County, and Daviess County .

history

Ohio County was formed on December 17, 1798 from parts of Hardin County. It was named after the Ohio River .

Two sites in Muhlenberg County have the status of a National Historic Landmark because of their special historical significance , the Green River Shell Middens Archeological District and Indian Knoll . A total of 18 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 19, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Ohio County's population was 22,916. 340 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,899 households and 6,585 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.71 percent white, 0.75 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.45 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.01 percent of the population.

Of the 8,899 households, 33.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, 26.0 percent were non-families, 23.2 percent were single households, and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.98.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 94.2 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the 29,557 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 34,970 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,778 versus $ 19,233 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,317. 13.9 percent of families and 17.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
