Simpson County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Franklin . The county is one of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or even prohibited.

The county is located in southwest Kentucky, borders the state of Tennessee to the south and has an area of 612 square kilometers with no significant water surface. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Warren County , Allen County, and Logan Counties .
history
Simpson County was formed on January 28, 1819 from parts of Allen County, Logan County and Warren County. It was named after Captain John Simpson, who was killed during the Battle of River Raisin in 1813 .

As of the 2000 census , Simpson County had 16,405 people in 6,415 households and 4,638 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.84 percent white, 10.22 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.55 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.30 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.87 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
33.8 percent of the 6,415 households had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers, 27.7 percent were non-families, 24.2 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 91.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,432 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,525. Males had a median income of $ 32,160 versus $ 22,667 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,150. 8.5 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
