Shelby County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Shelbyville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in north-central Kentucky, about 30 km to the northwest from Indiana , and has an area of 999 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Henry County , Franklin County , Anderson County , Spencer County , Jefferson County, and Oldham County .
history
Shelby County was formed on June 23, 1792 from parts of Jefferson County. It was named after Isaac Shelby , a governor and general.
The Whitney Young Birthplace and Museum has the status of a National Historic Landmark because of its special historical significance . A total of 140 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 21, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Shelby County had 33,337 people in 12,104 households and 9,126 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.61 percent white, 8.83 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.12 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.34 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.51 percent of the population.
Of the 12,104 households, 34.7 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, 24.6 percent were non-families, 20.2 percent were single households and 8.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.7 percent between the ages of 18 and 24, 31.4 percent between the ages of 25 and 44, and 24.0 percent between the ages of 45 and 64 10.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were 91.3 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,534 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,764. Males had a median income of $ 35,484 versus $ 25,492 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,195. 6.5 percent of families and 9.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 11.7 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
