Garrard County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States of America . The county seat is Lancaster , which was named after the city of the same name in Pennsylvania . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is east of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of 606 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water.
It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jessamine County , Madison County , Rockcastle County , Lincoln County , Boyle County, and Mercer County .
history
Garrard County was formed on December 17, 1796 from parts of Lincoln County, Madison County and Mercer County. It was named after the governor James Garrard .
Harriet Beecher Stowe , the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, visited the Kennedy Estate in Garrard County to collect material for her book. The former hut was a bit out of the way and was destroyed in 1926. Later, the county officials planned to rebuild the cabin at Governor William Owsley's country estate.

As of the 2000 census , Garrard County had 14,792 people in 5,741 households and 4,334 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.75 percent white, 3.06 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian and 0.43 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.32 percent of the population.
33.4 percent of the 5,741 households had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 62.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 21.1 percent were single households and 9.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.0 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 34,284 , and the median income for a family was $ 41,250. Males had a median income of $ 30,989 versus $ 21,856 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,915. 11.6 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 19.1 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 17.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
