Gallatin County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Warsaw , named after the Polish capital Warsaw .

The county is located in northern Kentucky, borders the state of Indiana in the northwest , separated by the Ohio River and has an area of ​​271 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Boone County , Grant County , Owen County, and Carroll Counties .

Albert Gallatin

Gallatin County was formed on December 14, 1798 as the 31st County from parts of Franklin County and Shelby County. It was named after Albert Gallatin , a US Treasury Secretary, ethnologist, linguist and diplomat. In the following years, the county was formed from Owen County (1819), Trimble County (1836) and Carroll County (1838). The current size of the county is only 10 percent of what it was before.

After the end of the Civil War , one of the largest steamship accidents in history occurred on the Ohio near Warsaw . Two passenger ships, the America and the United States . The United States had also loaded a cargo of kerosene , which ignited in the accident and both ships caught fire. The accident claimed 162 lives.

Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 1, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Gallatin County had 7,870 people in 2,902 households and 2,135 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.7 percent white, 1.6 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.3 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.0 percent of the population.

Of the 2,902 households, 37.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 26.4 percent were non-families, 22.0 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.11.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were statistically 96.0 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,422 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,136. Males had a median income of $ 32,081 versus $ 21,803 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,416. 11.6 percent of families and 13.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 16.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
