Hart County is a county in the US state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Munfordville , named after Richard Jones Munford , an early settler who made the land available for the new city.
geography
The county is located just west of the geographic center of Kentucky, about 70 km to the south of Tennessee and north of Indiana , and has an area of 1,082 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hardin County , LaRue County , Green County , Metcalfe County , Barren County , Edmonson County, and Grayson County .
history
Hart County was formed on January 28, 1819 from parts of Barren County and Hardin County. It was named after Captain Nathaniel GT Hart , who was killed in the War of 1812.
During the Civil War , a skirmish between North and South took place here at Rowlett's Station on December 17, 1861 as part of the Kentucky Offensive, which killed 131 soldiers. Another battle took place near Munfordville, September 14-17, 1862, between the Union forces and the Confederates, which ended in a Confederate victory and a total of 4,862 deaths.
Historical objects
- In Munfordville historic stands Chaplins Building (also known as Historical Society Museum ). The building is on Main Street. The Chaplin Building, constructed in 1892, was listed on July 24, 1980 by the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic Monument with the number 80001540.
- Also in Munfordville, at number 301 on South 5th Street , is Munfordville Baptist Church , which was admitted to the NRHP in 1980.

As of the 2000 census , Hart County had 17,445 people in 6,769 households and 4,812 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.58 percent white, 6.20 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.18 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.86 percent of the population.
Of the 6,769 households, 32.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 28.9 percent were non-families, 25.3 percent were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,378 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,746. Males had a median income of $ 26,994 versus $ 19,418 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,495. 18.6 percent of families and 22.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 28.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 22.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
