Grayson County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Leitchfield , named after Major David Leitch , whose widow donated the land for the city. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located west of the geographic center of Kentucky, about 50 km to the north from Illinois , about 80 km to the south from Tennessee , and has an area of 1,323 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Breckinridge County , Hardin County , Hart County , Edmonson County , Butler County, and Ohio Counties .

history

Grayson County was formed on January 15, 1810 from parts of Hardin County and Ohio County. It was named after Colonel William Grayson , who supported George Washington .

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 1, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Grayson County had 24,053 people in 9,596 households and 6,966 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.26 percent white, 0.50 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.77 percent of the population.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.8 men.

The median income for a household in the 27,639 USD , and the median income for a family was 33,080 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,759 versus $ 19,302 for females.
