Franklin County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Frankfort , which is also the capital of the state. The city was named after Stephen Frank , who was killed here by Indians.

The county is located in north-central Kentucky, 65 km to the northwest from Indiana , 90 km to the northeast from Ohio , and covers an area of 549 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Owen County , Scott County , Woodford County , Anderson County , Shelby County, and Henry County .

Franklin County was formed on December 7, 1794 from parts of Mercer County, Shelby County and Woodford County. It was named after the statesman Benjamin Franklin .
Before 1800 there were only four houses where South Frankfort is today. In 1798 a ferry across the Kentucky River was set up around 2 km above Frankfort . A. March 1, 1806, the first county courthouse was completed. On January 18, 1812, the first bridge over the Kentucky River was inaugurated near Frankfort. It was 334 feet long and 65 feet high in the center. In 1813, William Arnold and John A. McDowell opened the first law firm in Frankfort.
There are two National Historic Landmarks in Franklin County , Liberty Hall and the Old State Capitol . A total of 57 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 7, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Franklin County had 47,687 people in 19,907 households and 12,840 families. The population density was 87 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.98 percent white, 9.36 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.72 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.55 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.24 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.11 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 19,907 households, 29.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 48.7 percent were married couples living together, 12.2 percent were single mothers, 35.5 percent were non-families, 30.4 percent were single households, and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or older, there were 89.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,011 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,052. Males had a median income of $ 32,826 versus $ 26,201 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,229. 6.9 percent of families and 10.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 12.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.2 percent were people over 65 years of age.
