Breckinridge County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Hardinsburg , which was named after Captain William Hardin , one of the first settlers in the area. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in west central Kentucky, bordering the state of Indiana in the northwest , separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 1,517 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Meade County , Hardin County , Grayson County , Ohio County, and Hancock County .

Breckinridge County was formed on December 9, 1799 from parts of Hardin County. It was named after John Breckinridge , a US Senator and Attorney General for Kentucky.

Breckinridge County's population was 18,648 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 273 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7,324 households and 5,309 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.84 percent white, 2.86 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.09 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.72 percent of the population.
Of the 7,324 households, 31.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, 27.5 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,554 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,575. Males had a median income of $ 31,004 versus $ 19,371 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,402. 11.8 percent of families and 15.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 16.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 19.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
