Johnson County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Paintsville , named after the Paint Creek on which it is located. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in eastern Kentucky, about 30 km from West Virginia and has an area of 684 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lawrence Counties , Martin Counties , Floyd Counties , Magoffin Counties , and Morgan Counties .
history
Johnson County was formed on February 24, 1843 from parts of Floyd County, Lawrence County, and Morgan County. It was named after Richard M. Johnson , a general , US Senator , member of the US Congress and Vice President.
A total of 39 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 5, 2017).

Children and adolescents under the age of 18 lived in 34.1 percent of the 9,103 households. 60.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.3 percent were single mothers, 24.6 percent were non-families, 22.3 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.93 people.
For the entire county, the population consisted of 24.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 25.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age and 12 , 6 percent together with age 65 or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. Statistically speaking, there were 90.7 men for every 100 women at the age of 18.
The median income for a household in the county was US $ 24,911 and the median income for a family was US $ 29,142. Males had a median income of US $ 29,762 and females US $ 20,136. The per capita income was US $ 14,051. 21.7 percent of families and 26.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 35.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 19.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
