Muhlenberg County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Greenville , named after Nathanael Greene , an officer in the American Revolutionary War.

The county is located in west central Kentucky, about 60 km to the north from Illinois , about 50 km to the south from Tennessee , and has an area of ​​1,242 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: McLean County , Ohio County , Butler County , Logan County , Todd County , Christian County, and Hopkins County .

history

Muhlenberg County was formed on December 14, 1798 from parts of Christian County and Logan County. It was named after Peter Muhlenberg , a general in the American Revolutionary War , US Senator and member of the US Congress .

One site in Muhlenberg County has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Green River Shell Middens Archeological District , because of its special historical significance . A total of eleven structures and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 19, 2017).

The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.2 men.

The median income for a household in the 28,566 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 33,513 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,952 versus $ 18,485 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,798. 15.5 percent of families and 19.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
