Central City is a city in Muhlenberg County in the US state of Kentucky . In the year 2000 it had 5,893 inhabitants at the census, its area is 13.5 km².

Central City is on the Green River and was founded in 1826 as Morehead's Horse Mill . In 1873 the settlement was integrated into the Stroud City community . After the Owensboro and Russellville Railroad had built their railway line, it was renamed Owensboro Junction . The city has had its current name since 1882.

About three kilometers east of Central City was the Brownie settlement , a residential town of miners in the 20th century . Don Everly, one of the Everly Brothers, was born here in 1937 . On Labor Day 1988, the brothers gave a homecoming concert in their hometown . On this occasion, Chestnut Street was renamed Everly Brothers Boulevard . In the center of town is the Everly Brothers Monument , the inscription of which recalls the 1988 concert: “From Brownie to Iowa, to Knoxville, to Nashville, to Hollywood, to England, and around the world, Don and Phil took Kentucky's music with them, as taught by her parents, and now they are bringing her back to Central City ”.
