Whitley County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Williamsburg . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southeast Kentucky, borders the state of Tennessee to the south and has an area of ​​1153 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Laurel Counties , Knox Counties , Bell Counties , and McCreary Counties .

history

Whitley County was formed on January 17, 1818 from parts of Knox County. It was named after Colonel William Whitley , who died in the War of 1812.
