The LaRue County is an administrative district in the state of Kentucky of the United States . The county seat , Hodgenville , named after mill owner Robert Hodgen, is the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln . The district is one of the so-called dry counties , in which the sale of alcohol is severely restricted or prohibited.

The county is located just west of the geographic center of Kentucky and covers an area of ​​683 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Nelson County , Marion County , Taylor County , Green County , Hart County, and Hardin Counties .

history

Larue County was formed on March 4, 1843 from parts of Hardin County. It was named after John LaRue , an early settler in the area.

As of the 2000 census , LaRue County had 13,373 people in 5,275 households and 3,866 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.65% White, 3.54% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 0.34% other races Groups; 1.10% were descended from two or more races.
