The LaRue County is an administrative district in the state of Kentucky of the United States . The county seat , Hodgenville , named after mill owner Robert Hodgen, is the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln . The district is one of the so-called dry counties , in which the sale of alcohol is severely restricted or prohibited.

The county is located just west of the geographic center of Kentucky and covers an area of 683 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Nelson County , Marion County , Taylor County , Green County , Hart County, and Hardin Counties .

history

Larue County was formed on March 4, 1843 from parts of Hardin County. It was named after John LaRue , an early settler in the area.

A total of 32 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 5, 2017). Below that is the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park .

As of the 2000 census , LaRue County had 13,373 people in 5,275 households and 3,866 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.65% White, 3.54% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 0.34% other races Groups; 1.10% were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.05% of the population.

Of the 5,275 households, 32.5% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2% were married couples living together, 10.5% were a single mother, 26.7% were non-families, 23.7% were single households and 11.2% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.94.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0% of residents under the age of 18, 7.7% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.2% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.0% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.0% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 92.9 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,056 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,786. Males had a median income of $ 30,907 versus $ 20,091 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,865. 15.4% of the population and 12.6% of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 18.9% were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.4% were people over 65 years of age.
