Lewis County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Vanceburg , named after its founder Joseph Calvin Vance .

The county is located in northeast Kentucky, borders the state of Ohio , separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 1,284 square kilometers, of which 29 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greenup County , Carter County , Rowan County , Fleming County, and Mason County .
history
Lewis County was formed on December 2, 1806 from parts of Mason County. It was named after Meriwether Lewis , an American explorer, soldier, and administrative officer. He was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Lewis and Clark Expedition ( Corps of Discovery , Discovery Corps involved).
Five buildings in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 10, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Lewis County had 14,092 people in 5,422 households and 4,050 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.92 percent white, 0.21 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian and 0.09 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.44 percent of the population.
Of the 5,422 households, 35.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers, 25.3 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent were single households, and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,208 , and the median income for a family is $ 26,109. Males had a median income of $ 25,522 versus $ 18,764 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,031. 23.5 percent of families and 28.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 36.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 21.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
