Edmonson County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Brownsville , which was named after General Jacob Brown . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in west central Kentucky, about 60 km south of Tennessee and covers an area of 798 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Grayson County , Hart County , Barren County , Warren County, and Butler Counties .
history
Edmonson County was formed on January 12, 1825 from parts of Grayson County, Hart County and Warren County. It was named after Captain John Edmonson , who was killed at the Battle of River Raisin in 1813 .

According to the 2000 census , Edmonson County had 11,644 people in 4,648 households and 3,462 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.39 percent white, 0.58 percent African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.46 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.56 percent of the population.
Of the 4,648 households, 31.8 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 62.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, 25.5 percent were non-families, 22.4 percent were single households and 9.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.3 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,413 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,843. Males had a median income of $ 26,770 versus $ 17,158 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,480. 14.2 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 25.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 21.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
