Elliott County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Sandy Hook , named after its location on a bend in the Little Sandy River . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Kentucky, about 60 km to the north from Ohio , about 35 km to the east from West Virginia , and has an area of 609 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Carter County , Lawrence County , Morgan County, and Rowan Counties .
history
Elliott County was formed on January 26, 1869 from parts of Carter County, Lawrence County and Morgan County. It was named after John Milton Elliott , a member of the US Congress .
One of the county's sites, the Conley-Greene Rockshelter (15EL4) , is on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 7, 2017).
The county's voters have given the Democratic Party a majority vote in every presidential election in the United States since it was formed in 1869, with Barack Obama winning 49-47 percent in 2012, and over 85 percent of voters registered as Democrats. In the presidential election in 2016 succeeded the candidate of the Republicans , Donald Trump , to reach the majority of voters in the county for the first time. He received 70 percent of the vote against the 26 percent for the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton , in the below-average affluent area, which was characterized by former coal mining .

As of the 2000 census , Elliott County had 6,748 people in 2,638 households and 1,925 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.0 percent white and 0.1 percent Native American people; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.6 percent of the population.
Of the 2,638 households, 33.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers, 27.0 percent were non-families, 24.7 percent were single households, and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 21,014 USD , and the median income for a family was 27,125 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,593 versus $ 20,339 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,067. 20.8 percent of families and 25.9 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 30.5 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 26.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
