Lawrence County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Louisa . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Kentucky, on the border with West Virginia and has an area of 1,088 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Carter County , Boyd County , Martin County , Johnson County , Morgan County, and Elliott Counties .
history
Lawrence County was formed on December 14, 1821 from parts of Floyd County and Greenup County. It was named after Captain James Lawrence , who became famous with the saying: "Don't give up the ship" in the British-American War of 1812 after he was fatally wounded.
A total of ten buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 9, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Lawrence County had 15,569 people in 5,954 households and 4,477 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.93 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.05 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.41 percent of the population.
Of the 5,954 households, 35.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers, 24.8 percent were non-families, 22.4 percent were single households, and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 21,610 , and the median income for a family is $ 26,113. Males had a median income of $ 30,735 versus $ 19,174 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,008. 25.3 percent of families and 30.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 40.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 27.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
