The place Morehead was founded as the administrative seat.

Rowan County was home to numerous, scattered small parishes in the 1860s. Mainly corn was cultivated and a timber industry developed, favored by the large forest areas and the possibility of transporting the felled tree trunks on the Triplett Creek and Licking River . Farmers, Rodburn, Eadston and Brady were early centers of the timber industry. Coal mines and quarries were built near the towns of Rockville and Bluestone.
