Magoffin County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Salyersville , named after Samuel Salyer , a member of the Legislative Assembly.

The county is located in eastern Kentucky, about 60 km to the southeast from Virginia , to the northeast about 70 km from West Virginia , and covers an area of 801 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Morgan County , Johnson County , Floyd County , Knott County , Breathitt County, and Wolfe County .

Magoffin County was formed on February 22, 1860 from parts of Floyd County, Johnson County and Morgan County. It was named after the governor Beriah Magoffin .
Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 12, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Magoffin County had 13,332 people. 175 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,024 households and 3,858 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.29 percent white, 0.15 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian and 0.02 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.27 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.42 percent of the population.
Of the 5,024 households, 37.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, 23.2 percent were non-families, 21.4 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.04.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.8 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 94.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 19,421 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 24,031 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,745 versus $ 18,354 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,685. 31.2 percent of families and 36.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 45.9 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 29.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
