Nelson County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Bardstown , named after William Bard , a patron of the city.

The county is located just north of the geographic center of Kentucky, is about 50 km to the northwest from the state of Indiana and has an area of 1,098 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Spencer County , Anderson County , Washington County , Marion County , LaRue County , Hardin County, and Bullitt County .
history
Nelson County was formed on October 18, 1784 from parts of Jefferson County. It was named after Thomas Nelson junior , a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

As of the 2000 census , Nelson County had 37,477 people in 13,953 households and 10,269 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.84 percent white, 5.51 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.51 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.05 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,953 households, 38.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.9 percent were married couples living together, 12.1 percent were single mothers, 26.4 percent were non-families, 22.3 percent were single households, and 7.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.08.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.7 percent between the ages of 18 and 24, 30.8 percent between the ages of 25 and 44, and 22.2 percent between the ages of 45 and 64 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.5 men.
The median income for a household in the United States is 39,010, and the median income for a family is $ 44,600. Males had a median income of $ 32,015 versus $ 21,838 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,120. 10.0 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 15.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
