Madison County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Richmond .
geography
The county is east of the geographic center of Kentucky and covers an area of 1,148 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Fayette County , Clark County , Estill County , Jackson County , Rockcastle County , Garrard County, and Jessamine County .
history
Madison County was formed on August 1, 1785 from parts of Lincoln County. It was named after President James Madison . During the Civil War , a battle between the 1st and 2nd Brigade of the Kentucky Army on the Union side and the Confederate Kentucky Army took place here near Richmond on August 29th and 30th, 1862, which were victorious. A total of 5650 men were killed in this battle.

According to the 2000 census , Madison County had 70,872 people in 27,152 households and 18,218 families. The population density was 62 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.01 percent white, 4.44 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.72 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 27,152 households, 31.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 32.9 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent were single households and 7.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.90.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 18.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 90.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,861 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,383. Males had a median income of $ 31,974 versus $ 22,487 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,790. 12.0 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 17.8 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 17.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
