Karl Schröter (mathematician)

Karl Schröter (born September 7, 1905 in Biebrich near Wiesbaden, † August 22, 1977 in Berlin ) was a German mathematician and logician .

Schröter studied at the Universities of Göttingen, Heidelberg and Frankfurt a. M. the fields of mathematics, physics, philosophy and psychology. He received his doctorate in 1941 under Heinrich Scholz at the University of Münster and received his habilitation there in 1943 .

From 1948 he was professor of mathematics at the Humboldt University in Berlin (HUB), and since 1950 also director of the Institute for Mathematical Logic at the HUB. In 1954 he founded the "Journal for Mathematical Logic and Fundamentals of Mathematics" with Günter Asser .

In 1962 he gave a lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm : Proof of Church's hypothesis regarding the concept of decidability .

In 1962 he was elected as a corresponding member and in 1964 as a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (DAW).

From 1967 he was director of the Institute for Pure Mathematics at this Berlin academy.
