Günter Asser (born February 26, 1926 in Berlin ; † March 23, 2015 in Greifswald ) was a German mathematician , most recently professor emeritus for mathematics and logic at the University of Greifswald .

Life

Asser studied mathematics and physics at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1946 to 1951 , where he received his doctorate in 1954 . In 1958 he completed his habilitation there and in 1960 he became a professor in Greifswald.

He has edited numerous volumes on philosophers and mathematicians. His own research was in logic and the theory of computability . In 1954 he founded the "Journal for Mathematical Logic and Fundamentals of Mathematics" with Karl Schröter (since 1993 Mathematical Logic Quarterly ), was Managing Editor of this journal until 2004 and honorary editor from 2011 until his death. In 1975 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze. Since 1977 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .
